Pull Yourself Together, 2023

£350.00

A small fabric sculpture under a glass dome. Part of my Pull Yourself Together series, made from discarded clothing and various threads.

Size: 14.5 × 14.5 x 17cm

This black, tight object is small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. It looks comforting to hold like a tiny, dense, featureless teddy bear. It’s curling in on itself – foetus-like – bound tightly together, restrained with threads. It seems lonely, bravely holding itself together to be examined like a scientific exhibit under its glass dome.

It is solid but it’s possible to see that it is made from soft fabrics. It’s bound with a number of different kinds of threads – wool, cord, cotton, woven tape – like the upturned contents of a sewing box. This is a solemnly domestic accumulation.

Is this object concealing something trapped inside? Or does it, in fact, contain nothing at all. There’s a feeling that if the swaddling bands were released the sculpture would simply disintegrate.
